Morocco: A Commitment to Communities Affected by the High Atlas Earthquake

On Friday, September 8, 2023, a powerful 6.8 magnitude earthquake struck Morocco’s High Atlas mountain range, resulting in a tragic loss of over 2,000 deaths to date and widespread structural damages in mountainous villages and the historic center of Marrakech. At the time, Our Habitas RISE, our global impact initiative, provided relief support to impacted communities on the ground by providing aid and supplies.

A year later, in January 2025 the Our Habitas Agafay team visited the Atlas Mountains community affected by the earthquake alongside our friends at Anamel Al attaa —a non-profit organization dedicated to helping women and children. In return, we were warmly welcomed by the community with local songs and homemade breakfast and lunch, creating a lively atmosphere enjoyed by the children of the region.

“As we visited the resilient community of Douar Douzrou in the Atlas Mountains, I was deeply moved by their warmth and generosity despite the challenges they’ve faced. While we aimed to bring relief and make their daily lives a little easier, they turned the tables by welcoming us with incredible kindness and sharing delicious tajines.

Their spirit and hospitality left a lasting impression on us, reinforcing the importance of our commitment to creating meaningful impact through Our Habitas RISE and standing alongside our local communities in times of need” , said Nicolas Belzic, Our Habitas Africa Cluster General Manager.

Our entire global family, especially those who call Agafay and Marrakech home, is proud and honored to continue supporting and encouraging Anamel Al attaa’s efforts through Our Habitas RISE and our unwavering commitment to supporting the local communities we call home.
